I thought. I thought a lot. I skewed my mind beyond recovery. But I couldn't describe my mood that day any better than this line by a friend- "Years will disappear, but this day will remain."

And today too, the same line applies just as well.
(I could never understand the context of his line, though. I'm only talking about the line in isolation.) And you, obviously, can't understand the context of this post. Don't ask.

The Philosopher was definitely no Socrates (and whether he was greater or lesser than him is beyond the scope of this particular post :D). The award of the title The Philosopher to this man dates back to the year 2001. Though not all agreed on it, but nobody expressed the unease. The Introvert always hailed himself as a philosopher in his own assessment of himself, but he never quite pushed for the title. The fact that the announcement came from a girl, and the fact that girls were the species he seldom raised a voice against, and the fact that this particular girl was too sweet to be raised a voice against, tripled together to force The Introvert silently accept The Philosopher as The Philosopher. Others in the group, including The Cute Guy, The Shy guy, Mr. Gandhi, Mr. Straight-Legged etc didn’t have any objections, for they knew the title wasn’t meant for them anyway. Mr. Business Mind was hardly consulted due to some constraints of space and time. Ms. Main-Main, Ms. Bak-Bak, Ms. Vi, Ms Ni and everyone else from the fairer sex were too determined to make the original name of the guy be forgotten soon.

The two years of The Philosopher’s association with the bunch were great. He became the integral part of the group. It was impossible to screw the school’s system without his ideas and Straight-Legged’s planning. The system, as a whole, rarely suspected The Introvert because of his hard-earned image of a sincere guy, but for Mr. Bear, the chemistry teacher, he was the usual suspect. Somehow Mr. Bear had started believing, and it wasn’t entirely his imagination, that somebody from the group would stand up and ask a string of idiotic questions whenever he was in mood of taking a quiz; and this somebody happened to be The Introvert. During all such idiotic-questions-sincere-answers sessions, Gandhi and The Shy Guy would enjoy the changing expressions on the teacher’s face and make The Introvert know when it’s going overboard; The Philosopher and Straight- Legged would be busy planning for the next move eg. How to convince the girls for a mass bunk (The Cute guy was their trump card for such efforts); The Cute Guy and Ms. Bak-Bak would occasionally laugh facing each other because they knew that the questions being asked were really idiotic. Ms. Main-Main would be busy cleaning her glasses and planning on her next move to irk The Introvert; Ms Vi and Ms Ni would keep making silent noises only they could hear.

One always wondered if The Philosopher really cared for anything happening around him or “Ai ajnabi.. tu bhi kabhi..” was always playing in his mind. But the paper-out-efforts proved he was not an all-romantic and all-ethics-philosopher. Getting the paper out wasn’t tough for The Philosopher and Straight-Legged because Mr Bear’s nephew was their good friend, but solving it wasn’t as easy. The Introvert couldn’t be of much help either, but together they managed to solve a decent part of it. The Introvert obviously topped the exams with not even a third of the efforts Ms Bak-Bak must’ve put in standing the second. Surely Ms Bak-Bak deserved being the first (Hopefully, The Introvert was forgiven.). Never before in his life Mr. Bear was surprised more (Few options were left with him, getting surprised was the easiest.)

Nothing remains the same forever. The lives moved on. Everybody joined colleges. The Philosopher joined the Big Bachchan college, The Introvert found himself in Double I, etc etc. The friends hardly met, in fact, some did never. Mr. Straight-legged went straight to some foreign college, and is occasionally seen by one or two of the group (The Introvert not included) once a year or even less frequently. There were one or two Get Toghethers and The Introvert could only make it to one. And there, The Philosopher took it on himself to irk Miss Main-Main, with his questions like, “Main-Main, In the city ABC you must be eating in pattals” and "Does the sun shine more brighter there (you know what I'm pointing to)?"and her reactions were a delight to see (as always) for The Introvert, but what he liked more was to annoy her himself. The Philosopher didn’t spare Ms Bak-Bak either, but there he got some resistance, from some expected quarters. Ms. Vi, he later opined, knew what to speak, and when, and how much, comparatively better than others. Some people were too unhappy for The Little Fatso’s absence in the GT, The Philosopher was one. He would've been the life of the meet. Who else could dance on those numbers from the city ABC!

The lives moved on, again, for they never stopped actually. One day, The Philosopher happened to visit The Introvert at Double I; and he spent two great days there. Despite his utter unwillingness at that point in time, he couldn’t resist his tongue uttering, “Yaar, I’m gonna marry!”
“OK, man. This is the bed. Just have some sleep, you haven’t had enough for two days”
“Listen, I’m serious. I’m marrying.”
This was when The Introvert realized it. He made a few guesses on the name, but finally had to settle for the fact that it was going to be a traditional arranged marriage.

The news of The Philosopher going to marry soon was difficult to digest for The Introvert on his own. He needed help.
“You know I’ve some great news about The Philosopher..”
“Must be marrying, he. Aur kya hoga!”- In came the reply from the other side of the line. Wonder why Ms Main-Main wasn’t titled Miss Intuition in the school!
There were other reactions too.“You know The Philosopher is marrying?”- Somehow it had got into the habit of The Cute Guy to inform people, especially The Introvert, of things they already knew. But nobody did mind, perhaps because The Cute Guy was too cute - so cute that even half a bottle of beer would be enough for men to start kissing him (on cheek). Though nobody could get to know the ladies’ point of view about him, till date.
The Shy Guy’s shyness was gender-specific. He could tell the weirdest of his secrets to the guys, but couldn’t even call Ms Bak Bak despite being in the same city for months. But the news of The Philosopher’s Marriage date fixed was enough a force for him to call everybody, or at least, to tell others to call. The Philosopher, however, had to call everyone personally, and he did; though not everybody. Anyway.

“February the 21st”
Gandhi and The Shy guy could make it on the day before, but others couldn’t. They met The Introvert on the morning of the 21st, and then waited for The Cute Guy. Three of them mounted The Shy Guy’s bike to reach the groom’s place. Business Mind cancelled his tickets for Malaysia (He’s handling his father’s business) and all five were to get on his car when the Baraat proceeds towards bride’s place.

The Philosopher was standing, surrounded by a bunch of elderly people. Graceful, as he always was. Smile seldom reached his eyes, and this day was no exception. Maturity in his behavior wasn’t sudden, but now it was going to get the marriage stamp (For the time being, let's refrain from words like shock wave, hurricane, sunami, the last day of liberty, etc etc.)

Soon the Baraat proceeded. The last to leave the groom’s house was the group. The journey was basically a reunion. The placement talks were soon interrupted by The Shy Guy, “Yaar, I can’t dance without having a drink”.(Don’t question his shyness. The Shy Guy is only specifically shy. And therefore, those who call him by this name can’t be convinced to believe he is not.) With this assertion by him, and after (im)proper actions in the said direction, it was quite obvious that only Mr. Business Mind knew how to make it to the bride’s place. (Obviously, Mirinda is no Miranda. It can’t give you a high.) And thankfully, he was the one in the driving seat of the car at that point in time. The Introvert had with him the previous month’s experience of being seen as a drunkard in public without even touching the bottle, so it hardly mattered for him.

The secrets came into the mouth, but didn’t stick to the tongue and therefore were swallowed back. Gandhi would always be Gandhi. No matter how bad he would try to project himself, he would always be a nice guy. The Cute Guy would always be The Cute Guy. He would always look more cute than any girl he might have been involved with (That he didn’t shave for five days, and had at least a millimeter of beard, could hardly be a deterrence to the half-a-beer-effect). Knowing Business Mind all over again (after a gap of years) was a new experience for all of them. The Introvert was all praise for how the guy had strengthened his father’s business.

Finally, they reached there.
“Have you seen me dancing, ever before?” The Introvert asked The Philosopher.
“No”- came the obvious reply.
And then he saw somebody looking quite familiar. Yeah, The Little Fatso it was! He was seeing him after 5 years! And where! Those were the moments. All of them danced for quite a time. Then they had dinner, two plates, six men.

Marriage rituals followed. This was the time when the traditional Indian marriage scene and the gorgeous girls could couple together to shake any guy's I-won't-marry-vows. But the guys didn’t have much time, with two of them having some utter urgency to return to their colleges. Mr. Gandhi chose to board his bus from there only. The rest five (One minus, one plus) returned by the same car.

The secrets finally started getting poured out. The Cute Guy changed the name of his first crush, and was too appreciative of another’s dressing sense, “Anything looked good on her” (Don’t know how this amounts to be an appreciation of her dressing sense!), while The Introvert appreciated her smile only (only!!). And they didn’t fight! [The ladies mentioned in this paragraph aren’t the ones mentioned earlier.] But The Little Fatso couldn’t dare admit the famous slap. Business Mind told them about his not-so-sincere relationships in a foreign land, as well as about the girl he was seriously keen on marrying.

Finally, The Shy Guy picked up his bike from The Philosopher’s house. A bike moving alongside a car in the dark. Perfect Rang De Basanti scene. (The Shy Guy would’ve loved the same babe from RDB accompanying him on the bike, all his shyness be damned.)

Everybody was dropped home. The last one in the car with Mr. Business Mind was The Cute Guy. The Cute Guy must’ve thanked Mirinda, but who knows!
...................................................................................................

PS: 1. It’s a fictionalized story. The people are real, but the qualities I’ve associated with them may be beyond truth.
2. I hope nobody minds. I’ve deep respect for everybody mentioned here. If anybody has any genuine objections, I apologize.
3. I apologize in advance in response to the obvious objections The Cute Guy and Ms Main-Main will surely have.
4. It was written when I used to post with the display name of The Introvert on this blog; the word is not a description of myself as such.

So what happens when you refuse the last few tickets of an 8 pm show because three seats side by side aren't available? You've to pass three hours roaming in the area, your 11 pm show starts not before 11:40 and then you return back at 3 am. Anyhow it was not a pain at all, because the movie was good.

Now what? possibly another night-out!

Now who'z to blame for tomorrow's bunks?

Me, of course. I could well have slept an hour back.

Don't know why but this blog has experienced a lot of change recently. May be because I've just chosen it to be a log of my life and I don't keep the readers in mind any longer while writing. Just forgive me if you dislike the change.

Good night. err.. good morning!!

Nothing beats the fun of standing in one's balcony for two hours on a january night. Letting your feet move into the part of the wing where the chilly wind attains a momemtum is a real mix of pain and pleasure. And pain could never beat the pleasure whenever they tend to exist simultaneously.

It had to be another of my eccentric or stupid idea, or whatever you call, to stand in the balcony at 3 am! The only thing that tried to put up some resistance to the lovely breeze getting all over me was a thin shirt, sleeves rolled up. Insomnia can make you go crazy at times.

We are so accustomed to talk about tears in terms of those of sorrow and those of happiness. Rarely do we remember even winters can get our eyes wet.

A night-out (a misnomer I know) is no new thing for me. The only nights I can't pass without sleep are those of the exams time. It is never tough passing a night talking with friends, or wasting time on your computer. Yesterday night was different though. Firstly, I was alone; and secondly, the computer was off for the whole night (though the 'night' by an average hosteler's standards starts not before other people's midnight.)

Really, it's the variety in experiences that makes life enjoyable. They so rightly say 'excess of everything is bad'. Using the internet for hours at a stretch is no fun. So lately I've decided to introduce some variety in my life. Thanks to this friend of mine (whose room was under renovation, and therefore was his continuous presence in my room, and it irritated me somewhat, I confess.) I was literally dragged into watching a few episodes of 'Friends' on my computer and to my surprize I liked them! and so I'm watching the series now without anybody forcing me to!

Also, there are these scores of movies I've to watch. Movies are fun. You don't have to strain the tissues of your brain for them, quite unlike blogging. (And of course, studies should also have their share of time, and brain.)
In a similar search for variety, I plan to listen to more of western and some light Punjabi music and take a break from the Hassans and Jagjits for a while.

And then, seeing this other friend of mine having abandonned his computer and reading literature in all his free time enthused me to start reading again. And the first book I took up was the one I perhaps detested most- Five Point Someone! Having known the story ever since my first year, I was always sure that a story about The Jail I myself am in can't be an enjoyable read. And again to my surprize, I wasn't right. "It's a must read for every IITian"- they rightly say! I finished reading it at 3 in the night, or morning if you say! They say "You can't sleep once you are past the hour you were feeling sleepy in". And so happened my first all alone and no computer night-out. This was the first time this winter in Delhi when I saw the first rays of the sun. And then, I obviously had to sleep.

Happy new year fellas!

So here I am... back TO (and also FROM) life! I could never figure out whether I like home the more or the campus. Perhaps, at any point in time, it's the one where I am not!

Everyone seems to be wishing everyone else a happy new year. And everyone knows 2nd of january would be no different than any day of december the last.
The contrast between any two consecutive days is best seen between Holi and the day after. Everything dries up. Moments, by default, are fractions of a second only.

Why doesn't everything remain just the same for a week at least? Errr.. not for me.. I won't like breaking the lock on my room on 7 consecutive nights (like what I had to do yesterday) when everybody else would be planning for the celebrations of The Night! As Shalabh put it, "I don't understand why you people return on 31st!!"

But yeah, (now I think) it was fun!- watching five of my most respected seniors trying their hands on the lock, including the one I least expected to (Need I name?)!!

I did resolve not to write on personal life. This is the first resolution I break! And I loved breaking it! Cheers! (Hope 'Cheers' doesn't even remotely indicate I drink, because I don't. Any instance of me telling anyone that I drink has to be a lie.)

Again, wishing you a very happy new year! Cheers!

November 17, 2006

Guys, today i'm gonna try to live up to the URL of my blog! I couldn't attend morning as I woke up late. And I chose not to attend PHP in the afternoon. I didn't want to have this 4-hour headache on my birthday.
.......................

I was thinking:
[1]There are some friends I value a lot. I really do.
[2]Then there are many friends for whom I don't matter at all. I really don't care.

The only time I care is when I find some persons from the former list also belong to the latter.and it really hurts. Sometimes I think the two lists should be exclusive. It's not in my handsto make changes in list-2. So in order to bring about the exclusivity, I tend to remove from thelist-1 the people who have chosen to belong to list-2. But life is no mathematics, and so it turns out that even list-1 is not in my hands. I could never throw anyone out of the list. They have been too good friends to deserve that. So the intersection of the two sets is not empty and can't be emptied. Tough..
For those who belong to [1]intersection[2] and happen to stumble upon this blog some day:Guys I value you a lot. I really do. And I don't care if I don't matter for you. I can't change myself (not that I don't want to)!
But there still are people who are in the list[1] all deservingly. The odd friend who called me up at the midnight is one. No matter how rarely she calls up, she never forgets to make a call on my birthday at least. Given the intense blurter that she is, I don't get much to speak, though I get a few advices like "You should change", "Learn French" etc, and a few titles- bewkoof, ganda bachcha etc. Then there's another friend whose call I missed as I was having a bath at the time. It's easier for him to remember as his own birthday falls on the day next. Thank you both! Looks like my list[1] has got too short. I guess i'm losing out on friendships once considered life-long. There's some fault of mine too, indeed.
Then, there are a few hostelmates who took some time out of their busy lives to wish me. Thanx guys.
I'm sure there will be another few who wud wake up late and call me towards the end of the day,as was the case last year. Thanx in advance.
...............

Got this colorquiz idea from phoenix's blog and thought of trying myself:

Evening should be fun. The party time!! Computer off!!!

Sitting in the comfort of my room at 9 am in the monday morning I just have one thought: Never keep your B-slot free if you really wanna attend A. Walking more than a km at 8 am for one single class is not my cup of tea. Happy teaching ma'am. May your class never be empty. Infact it can't be, thanks to those who have to walk only a 100 metres...
"""""

Rendezvous ended yesterday... really liked it in my first year, but watching the same events for the third time didn't seem to be a fantastic idea. The news of people breaking the barriers for rock show was hard to believe... but then, some people had their first year this time only :)
Still I can't swallow the popularity of Rock Show. Hitherto unheard of bands performing well below their own mediocrity... doesn't seem to be a good package. Still it goes on to be a big hit every year, giving more voices to "We organise the biggest college festival in north india", all because of the thronging DU crowds. What attracts DU people in the Show? ohh.. may be its all because one-third of their undergrads is first year... more than ours one-forth. My poor sense of humor, I know.
"""""

So yesterday evening I had two choices at the crossroads near juice shop.. and thanx to a friend I chose the Professionals' Play. So our group split into two with all others heading for the Rock show. Infact they didn't have to move any further.. the queue had itself reached them. And we two reached the sem hall.. the play had started.
Mirza Ghalib reborn in 21st century.. no age deductions applied! What a great comedy it was! Here was a show that could hold the hall house-full with a concept our generation is blamed not to be able to relate to. With crowds showing their willingness to connect to the life and the times of Ghalib, claps showed a negligible time-gap.
Mirza Ghalib is reborn in his very own delhi after some recently dead shayar tells him in jahannum that if he were born on earth in these times he would have been popular in his lifetime itself. So Mirza lands up at ISBT.. and the comedy starts unfolding. Later on takes a room on rent.. room-partener suggests to approach DU for becoming the chairman of urdu wing. The chanceller says, " Yes, you are Ghalib.. definitely you are Ghalib.. but sorry, you are not PhD. You are not Dr. Asadullah Khan Ghalib. We can't appoint you even as a lecturer."
Ghalib's visits to tawayaf's place allowed the director to bring in Ms. Sheravat, but the main concept of the play didn't stray. When he is told that he can be given Bharat-ratna if he meets president, he talks to himself, "Zaroor koi umda kism ki sharab hoti hogi". Translaters were taken a dig at.. by highlighting the splendour of his original work in comparison to the non-sense versions in Hindi and Punjabi. In the end, he finds himself in Ritu-Beri-designed bermudas!
It's difficult to write down everything here. Ghalib's was the best stage performance I've ever seen. In the end when the director introduced the cast, I was like,"This 20-something played that role!!" Great.
When returned back near the juice shop, we saw the crowds still rocking, with their moods still red. It would take us years to cross over those four wavelenghs. Mediocrity can't catch up with Mood Indigo!
""""""

The comic show on Ghalib reminded me of Lage raho Munnabhai, which I saw quite sometime back but didn't write about. Certainly comedy is the best way to talk values with today's generation. There is no point in writing about the movie now that everybody has watched it (Just watch it if you haven't, yet). I just didn't want this movie to not get even a mention on my blog. Felt the same sentiment which I read on a blog,"Kaash, mera bhi Circuit jaisa koi dost hota!".. mesmerised by superb natural acting by this guy... seems like soon I'd forget his real name.. he is nothing but Circuit!
Kudos to the director too. No one ever presented Gandhian philosophy in a better way!
""""""
KK was good in Pronite... better than Indian Oceans, Tantriks, Silk Routes of recent years. This is what I heard from others. I didn't watch this show due to some personal reasons. After all, rendezvous can't be the most important thing in anybody's life. All those things some other time...

Another event at rendezvous- Thitholi.. only Surender Sharma was able to hold crowds, though his comic takes on husband-wife relationships were not the first-time-heard kinda things for many. He asked to shut down the video recording.. either he thinks he is very popular or he fears that the recordings if telecast won't allow him to throw the same jokes again and again. Mumtaaz's romantic ghazal (with not much of depth) was also able to attract some attention, may be it was for herself only!

Group Dance was on the usual patterns. IITians' hands always clap for LSR, whether or not they deserve it. After the worst performance amongst all colleges in the first round, LSR managed to save their face in the second round, and stood second ( how come? didn't they consider the first round. SRCC deserved better). Some IET was first and the third place was obviously reserved! No, sorry, this time the IITD's permormance was good enough to prevent the eyebrows rising!

LSR also got the award for the overall best college for the fest. Get over man.. you won't see Her again!

Now that you have already wasted a couple of seconds in trying to figure out any sensible undertones in the title, and most likely failed in your sincere attempt, I have just one thing to say-"sorry". And if you choose to read this post till its last line then take my apologies in advance 3 more times, for you will find many things (deliberately) left unclear. So make your choice!
Sometimes I think I can write good fiction (the realization that I can't comes a little later!). The same thought caught me on a night exactly a year back and I started writing this piece:
""""""Waking up at 10 in the morning had, by then, become a usual pattern for him ever since he joined the college- as no member of his family was going to pull him out of his bed any more. That day, however, was different: firstly because he woke up quite early despite having slept very late, secondly some members of his family were around (though his parents were not there till then. He didn't want them to know all this, ever, if it were in his hands), and thirdly they couldn't dare pull him out of his bed that day.
His uncle was sitting beside. He had just arrived. They just kept looking at each other for a few moments- neither had anything to talk about, or perhaps had too much for the speech to handle. Eyes helped.
After a brief converstion, he was then looking for his friend Ankit who had become a routine sight for him for the last 15 hours or so. He was out to arrange some urgently required things. Had a lot to talk to uncle, but he couldn't resist another nap, until his cousin arrived. Meeting after a long time, they had some nice talk.
He was still not sure what finally was going to happen, no one around him was. Soon, Ankit arrived with his contagious smile on as usual, but this time with an added effort to hide the sleep deprivation.""""""
That's all of my attempt at fiction on the said day. Writing fiction is difficult. Fictionalising the reality is even more difficult. Fictionalising yourself is the most.
Now an year later, I am not going to put my time in completing this fictionalisation of the reality. But realities in raw form are harsh, howsoever easy it may be to pen them down. And then, there are realities you never need to pen down, for their imprints on your mind are everlasting.
One doesn't encounter death many times (for the most people it is a one time event). One doesn't get to hear the doctor estimating only 20-30% chances for oneself. One doesn't force his father to do one's little tasks within one month of his own surgery. One doesn't let his mother sit beside him for many consecutive nights. One doesn't see one's sister weeping buckets when one reaches home just after a month. But then, there are many such ones and many more much unfortunate than them.
No life was ever a one sided coin though... and the ones who face the desasters are no exception. World starts looking to be so enjoyable after one recovers from the tragedies.. the taste of a roti after 7 days.., a tea.., and the first and foremost- the first sip of water.. seems as if one has had some joy which mortals get only by chance. And then a renewed interst in life.. a will to enjoy it in better ways, to enjoy it fully before one discovers it's about to end..again.
In times of desasters one finds people hitherto little known to them passing sleepless nights for them..and develops great friendships with them in due course.
Sometimes I find myself unable to do things which I do know are very important. Have got many things to say to Mom, Dad, Ankit, Manoj and some hostelmates from my own year. But I can't. I never could. I wish you all could understand without me saying.
I can never forget september the thirteenth,2004. Every year on this day my memories will keep on menifesting themselves into something or the other.. last time it was some incomplete fiction.. this time it's this semi-comprehensible blog post (but the title, at least, does make some sense!)
Now accept my apologies if the four already offered were not enough!
