50 years ago, on 35 mm black and white screen, Guru Dutt created one of the best classics of Hindi Cinema - Pyaasa. I watched it today for the first time and I don't remember watching any movie better than this one. Now I know why Guru Dutt is hailed as a genius of the art of film-making.
1957 was the greatest year in the history of Indian Cinema. Two of the greatest movies of all time- 'Mother India' and 'Pyaasa' were released this year! Now I guess I would like to compare the two by watching them within a short interval of time very soon.
I tend to talk about the pitiful standards of the film-makers of today's India everytime I watch such classics. But let's leave that. We all know.
But are the film-makers the only ones to blame for all this? Do we want to see the common man's India in our movies? Would you like to buy a ticket for 'Pyaasa' (if you knew beforehand that 'looser', 'eccentric', 'pagla', 'impractical' are some of the words you can associate with the protagonist) if it were to release today? I myself am not sure if I would!

Gurudutt was a great film maker. Have you seen Kaagaz ke Phool...they say its his life story. Its so very touching!
Mother India is a movie of struggle, a movie of female protagonism, and a movie of courage. You need a strong heart to do justice. Nargis has done a wonderful job! The music too is good - I like the songs Nagrii Nagrii Dwaare Dwaare and Duniya mein hum aaye hain to jeena hi padega. BTW, it was beacause of this movie that Nargis went on to marry Sunil Dutt, and broke up with Raj Kapoor. She had a weird desire - she wanted her would-be husband to act as her son in a movie!
I don't mind seeing the true India. We can't blame our film makers, for we have kind of lost the era of the arts. Be it music, painitng, poetry or films. The world today is reigned by power and materials, not emotions. That is what I personally feel.

I have n't seen it, though have heard a lot bout it. (but dear, u should've chosen something lighter for ur b'day. Anyways, ur choice!)
Yeah, MI is really a great movie. Did I sound like not having seen it? I just wanted to say I wanna refresh it in my mind by watching again so that I can make a just comparison. Music, performances and the storyline are oh so fantastic in both the movies.
History will always be weird.
What u feel is perhaps, and unfortunately, a reality.
two movies which i want to watch and havent till date....pyaasa and ijazzat
hope to see them soon

Wishing you get a chance soon!
Yes, I agree, I always feel film makers thought more while making a movie at that time. But even today good movies are made, and I am sure it doesn't matter to those film-makers whether we choose to watch them or not. After the noisy publicity and the fizz of superhits dies out, maybe we'll like these movies.

Yeah! I agree with u!
And sorry, the switch over to new blogger took ur identity off here!
