[There can be hundreds of poems/she'rs of Mir Taqi Mir much much better than the ones I'm posting here. I could only select from the ones I could undertand and appreciate with my limited urdu vocabulary. (Limitations are a vicious circle.)]
Phir bhii karate hai.n "Mir" saahib ishq
Hai.n javaa.n ikhtiyaar rakhate hai.n
.
Hosh jaataa nahii.n rahaa lekin
Jab Vo aataa hai tab nahii.n aataa
.
Ab to jaate hain butkade ai 'Mir',
Phir milenge agar khuda laaya.
.
Dil vo nagar nahii.n ke phir aabaad ho sake
Pachhataaoge suno ye bastii ujaa.D kar
.
Be-Khudii le gaii kahaa.n hum ko
Der se intezaar hai apanaa
.
Sakht kaafir thaa jisane pehle 'Mir'
mazahab-e-ishq ikhtiyaar kiyaa
(kaafir= infidel/non-believer, ikhtiyaar= to accept)
.
Naazukii us ke lab kii kyaa kahiye
Pa.nkha.Dii ik gulaab kii sii hai
.
Marg-e-Majnu.n pe aql ghum hai 'Mir',
Kya diwaane ne maut paai hai.
(marg= death)
.
Kahen kya jo puchhe koi hum se 'Mir',
Jahaan mein tum aae the kya kar chale.
.
Vo bazm me.n aaye itanaa to 'Mir' ne dekhaa
Usake baad chiraago.n me.n roshanii na rahii
.
Hum hue, tum hue, ki 'Mir' hue
us kii zulfo.n me.n sab asiir hue
(asiir= imprisoned)
Reekhta ke tumhi ustaad nahi ho 'Ghalib'
Kahtay hain agle zamanay mein koi Meer bhi tha.

Your blog completes my balanced poetic diet through such selections that you post! :)
Specially liked these -
Be-Khudii le gaii kahaa.n hum ko
Der se intezaar hai apanaa
Kahen kya jo puchhe koi hum se 'Mir',
Jahaan mein tum aae the kya kar chale.
Hum hue, tum hue, ki 'Mir' hue
us kii zulfo.n me.n sab asiir hue
And the final sher by Ghalib is interesting!
Amazing selection! Ghalib's she'r is too good, I must say. I wonder what made him write that...was it appreciation, or was it jealousy? You can never know. He chose to beautifully hide his "real" meaning within those words...

... and I fulfill my time-constrained literary appetite through the excerpts you post! Sometimes I think of writing a book containing paragraphs only vaguely coherent, never making a story, but still interesting.. like excerpts.
Glad you liked those she'rs.

This she'r may not be clear on it, but he really held Mir in high regard as can be seen in another of his she'r:
Apna bhi ye aqeedaa hai baqaul-e- Naasikh
Aap bebahra hai jo motqid-e-Meer nahii.n
(I do confirm the belief of Naasikh that one who does not accept Meer's greatness is an amateur himself.)
But the she'r which I posted in the post is more widely known, maybe because of a mix of both appreciation and jealousy- this mix is a real human emotion, ain't it?
Nice selection...Ghalib's references to Mir in his poetry really say it all.
On a different note, Firaq was pretty devoted in his appreciation of Mir and referred to him explicitly in poems...
I am not sure about this .. but according to the TV serial Mirza Ghalib.. this she'r by Ghalib was recited when he heard someone reciting the following she'r by Ghalib
"Patta patta, boota boota haal humaara jaane hai
Jaane na jaane, gul hi na jaane.. baag to saara jaane hai"
