"Vanity is as ill at ease under indifference as tenderness is under a love which it cannot return."

It's so much an understatement. Vanity is a clown under indifference as tenderness is a mockery under a love it can't return.
(as far as I got it!)

Depends. Your case holds when vanity is about to lose it, hers when it's holding strong. Your case holds when the tenderness is fake, hers when it's genuine.
So if vanity and tenderness are at their 'best', your case won't hold!
[As far as I got the two statements :D ]
